In the spirit of wellness.
Care Caf矇 hosted our first virtual presentation, Evidenced-Based Nutrition for Reproductive Health and Healing from our In the Spirit of Wellness series featuring representatives from Plant Powered Metro New York (PPMNY).
In partnership with the Manhattan Cluster Advisory Board of the National Black Leadership Commission on Health (NBLCH), over 70 community members representing a variety of social services programs, faith-based institutions, and other interested persons, were educated about the benefits of a plant-based nutrition.
Lianna Levine ReisnerLianna Reisner, MSOD, President and Network Director of Plant Powered Metro New York, shared her very personal story of a journey to implement plant-based nutrition as a means of d achieving optimal health. Lianna is building a multicultural movement for health to empower local communities to address health concerns through evidence-based, plant-based nutrition. Her story inspired the attendees to want to learn more about these benefits.
Providing remarks about her personal journey, Rebecca Johnson, culinary organizer for PPMNY, offered details of the miraculous changes in her life since having plant-based diet. A Harlem resident, Rebecca works as a plant-based health supportive chef and nutrition and culinary education manager. Rebecca was certified in Plant-Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. She teaches plant-based cooking classes for nonprofit organizations and educational institutions. Rebecca will be leading cooking demonstrations during the wellness series with Care Caf矇 and PPMNY.
Dr. Neal Barnard
Our renowned keynote speaker was Dr. Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, adjunct professor of medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients.
Dr. Barnard has authored more than 100 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers. As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition and higher ethical standards in research. Care Caf矇 was very fortunate have Dr. Barnard to join us.
Graciously, Dr. Barnard, Lianna, and Rebecca offered one-on-one consultations to participants with questions about a wide range of health conditions, implications of plant-based nutrition, and the relationship between nutrition and strengthened mental health.
Care Caf矇s wellness series continues with our next virtual lunch and learn presentation offered by PPMNY entitled, Food as Fuel: Discover The Power of Plants on Jan. 31, 2022, at 12:30pm.
