Dr. Jonathan Feldman, professor of psychology at and associate professor of pediatrics at , has co-authored two articles on asthma and panic.
In Psychological treatment of comorbid asthma and panic disorder in Latino adults: Results from a randomized controlled trial, published in Behaviour Research and Therapy, Dr. Feldman et al describe the test of of a treatment that they developed specifically for asthma and panic disorder among Latinos. This is a follow-up on previous publications of theirs that panic disorder has detrimental effects on asthma, some of which appears to be confusion between asthma versus panic symptoms due to their overlap.
The Adaptive Effect of Illness-Specific Panic-Fear on Asthma Outcomes in Mexican and Puerto Rican Children, published in The Journal of Pediatrics, shows that not all anxiety is bad and that it is important to distinguish between types of anxiety since vigilance-driven anxiety can be a very good thing when it comes to chronic disease management.
The editorial in the same issue as the article cited their work as helping move the literature forward in guiding research in practice and offering important insight into panic-fear mechanisms.
